  2. promote responsible, efficient & safe operation of watercraft;
  3. foster widespread knowledge of & compliance with the laws, rules, & regulations governing the operation of watercraft; &
  4. to facilitate other operations & missions of USCG & DHS as appropriate.

A:

Facility (radio station, boat or aircraft) ownership is desirable, but not mandatory.

Q:

A:

No, there are many other areas of service available such as Vessel Safety Checks (VSC), Public Education, Administrative Support, Aids to Navigation/Chart Updating, Public Affairs including National Safe Boating Week, Boat Show Participation, Marine Dealer Visitations & Sea Explorer, Scout & Naval Sea Cadet Training.

Q:

How much time must I be willing to invest if I join CGAux?

A:

No fixed time requirements exist , so you can invest as little or as much time & effort as fits into your schedule.  To remain on "active roster," you can not miss three monthly meetings in a row without getting an excused absence from Flotilla Commander (FC).  However, like anything in life, you only get out of something what you are willing to invest in it.

Q:

What type of skills must I posses to belong to CGAux?

A:

The only thing the Auxiliary & USCG require is that you have an interest & desire in learning & getting involved.  CGAux gets involved in a very broad range of activities & DHS, USCG & CGAux are all committed to life long learning & willing to invest time & effort in training members & developing their skills, abilities & expertise as required.

Q:

Is CGAux a military component of USCG?

A:

The Auxiliary's role is entirely within USCG's civil functions & does not extend into any military or law enforcement responsibilities of the service.  Thus, Auxiliary Members may not carry firearms when conducting activities even if they have civil authorization to do so by either permit or in their occupation.

Q:

What is below decks?  Does it include the space below a flying bridge deck?

A:

Below deck is below main the deck. A space below a flying bridge deck does not qualify. However, such a space may be an enclosed cabin.

Q:

What is an enclosed cabin?  Does plastic or canvas siding qualify as an enclosed cabin?

A:

An enclosed cabin is a space that is enclosed by solid bulkhead, windows or doors.  A space with button down or tied down plastic or canvas coverings over rails or braces does not qualify as an enclosed cabin.

Q:

If an enclosed cabin on a vessel has a sliding door as aft bulkhead, is it still an enclosed cabin with sliding door locked in open position?

A:

Yes, it is still an enclosed cabin even with door locked open.

Q:

Can a state law enforcement officer (DNR) take action regarding federal regulation?

A:

Any law enforcement officer can submit a CG-4100 form (report of boarding) through a USCG unit to a CG Hearing Officer to process a civil penalty violation.

Q:

How is age of children verified to determine whether or not a violation exists relative to requirement for wearing a Lifejacket (PFD)?

A:

In most cases, verbal claim of child will suffice.  If boarding officer has reasonable grounds to doubt verbal claim, identification may be sought.  In absence of identification & where reasonable grounds exist to suspect a violation, enforcement action should be taken, with amplifying information noted on CG-4100 form.
