Electric S-O-S Distress Light Approved as Alternative to Flares on Recreational Vessels

USCG approved lights are required to automatically flash S-O-S plus meet all intensity & duration requirements for such emergency devices.

Currently "Electric S-O-S Distress Lights" are self-certified by the manufacturer, so the USCG does not issue approvals or keep a list of authenticated manufacturers.  Thus, be sure that any of these devices you purchase meet:

New Navigation Rules & Regulations Handbook (ISBN: 9780160925665)

USCG released an updated version of Navigation Rules on November 30, 2015 that contains several changes which recreational vessel owners/operators need to review and understand.

SAFETY ADVISORY: Smoke Distress Signal Recall

USCG has withdrawn Certificate of Approval for NAMMO LIAB AB Orange Hand Smoke Distress Signal, due to risk of spontaneous combustion when dropped.

Defective devices may be labeled & marketed as “Polar MK 4” by NAMMO LIAB AB or as “IKAROS” by Hansson Pyrotech.  “IKAROS” Hansson Pyrotech is more current provider.

Any of above signaling devices manufactured after October 2013 must be properly disposed & replaced with a certified product that satisfies vessel’s carriage requirements.

TYPE V PFD CO2 CYLINDER SAFETY NOTICE
