Maryland Rules & Regulations

Anyone born on or after July 1, 1972 must posses an approved Boating Safety Education Certificate to operate a vessel for pleasure on State waters that is required to be "registered" or "numbered" (equipped with primary or secondary mechanical/electrical propulsion).  If certificate cannot be produced law enforcement officers review on request, a minimum fine of $25 for first offense and up to $500 for each additional offense can be imposed.

Additional Lifejacket features required for children under 4 years or 50 lbs:

1) strap between the legs

2) inflatable headrest or high collar

3) web grab handle

Effective April 13, 2010, any child under 13 is required to wear a lifejacket or personal flotation device (PFD) while aboard an underway vessel 21 ft or less.

Effective October 1, 2010, anyone under 16 must possess a Certificate of Boating Safety Education to operate a vessel equipped with primary or secondary mechanical/electrical propulsion unless they are being supervised by someone 18 or older who has earned a Boating Safety Education Certificate or an adult born prior to July 1, 1972.
